“The Summer King” Coming to the Detroit Opera House May 12th
The Michigan Opera Theatre is staging four performances of the new opera “The Summer King” at the Detroit Opera House from Saturday, May 12, to Sunday, May 20. “The Summer King” tells the story of the life and career of Negro Leagues superstar Josh Gibson.
In conjunction with the Saturday, May 19, performance, SABR’s Detroit Chapter will hold a two-hour dinner meeting at the Detroit Beer Company, 1529 Broadway, directly across the street from the Opera House. The meeting will begin at 4:30 with a trivia quiz about Josh Gibson, followed by a discussion of Gibson’s Hall of Fame career.
After dinner, those who wish to attend the performance will adjourn to the opera house for a 6:30 pre-show discussion about the Opera featuring composer Daniel Sonenberg and SABR Detroit members and Negro League experts Dr. Lisa Alexander and Gary Gillette.
