The SABR Detroit Chapter will hold its annual SABR Day meeting on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, from 1:00 till 5:30 p.m. The meeting location will be the familiar and beautiful Friends Conference Room (next door to the Ernie Harwell Room) on the balcony of the Detroit Public Library in Midtown Detroit.

The focus of our 2017 meeting will be on the history of Black Baseball and the Negro Leagues in Detroit and Hamtramck. Selections from several documentaries about the Negro Leagues will be screened and special guest Joyce Stearnes Thompson, daughter of Hall of Famer Turkey Stearnes, will speak. Gary Gillette will give an update on significance of the recent award of an African American Civil Rights Grant to Hamtramck Stadium.

A panel discussion about the Negro Leagues will be held after the screening and presentations. In additional to Ms. Stearnes Thompson, other panelists expected to participate are Rosilyn Stearnes-Brown, Negro League veteran and Detroit legend Ron Teasley, and Coach Mike Wilson of the Woodbridge Baseball Academy. More details on the agenda will be sent before the meeting.

After the meeting, many of us will head to Nemo’s sports bar on Michigan Avenue near the old Tiger Stadium site for the annual Babe Ruth birthday party, sponsored by Tom Derry of the Navin Field Grounds Crew. The Babe Ruth bash is open to the public.

Please RSVP to Gary Gillette at GGillette(at)HiddenGameSports.com. As always, SABR Detroit meetings are open to the public, so bring your friends and family. All are welcome.
