The SABR Detroit Chapter’s next meeting will be held on Saturday, November 19, at Pages Bookshop, 19560 Grand River Avenue in Northwest Detroit.

The meeting will run from 2-5 p.m. and feature a book club-style discussion of Detroit-area author Tom Stanton’s renowned baseball oeuvre. In particular, we will discuss Tom’s latest book, Terror in the City of Champions, along with two earlier books, The Final Season and Ty and the Babe.

Tom will speak briefly before the discussion and also sign books. As usual, the inestimable, inimitable, and indefatigable Steve Weingarden will serve as our moderator.

Winner of Spitball magazine’s Casey Award for best baseball book of 2001, The Final Season is Stanton’s touching tribute to Tiger Stadium, to his father, and to the Grand Old Game itself.

In his 2007 book Ty and the Babe, Stanton tells the story of the unlikely but delightfully surprising post-career friendship of the Georgia Peach and the Sultan of Swat.

In 2016’s Terror in the City of Champions, Stanton intertwines Detroit baseball history with the history of the almost forgotten Black Legion, a right-wing terror organization that briefly thrived in the city in the 1930s.
